Swedish chocolate balls (chokladbollar)
Chokladbollar or chocolate balls, possibly the first thing Swedish children learn to make. It is very simple as it doesn’t require any baking, so very quick to make. It takes no more than 20 minutes from the moment my son asks “mamma, can we make chocolate balls?” Till the moment they’re actually ready for eating.
Very popular at birthday parties too.
Here’s what you need
120 g / 1 1/4 cup porridge oats
75 g / 1/4 cup of sugar
100 g of butter (not too cold)
3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder *
1 tsp vanilla paste or extract
3 tbsp of slightly cooled coffee (Don’t worry they won’t taste of coffee, but if you prefer not to use it you can add some water or milk instead)
Desiccated coconut or sprinkles (or both)
*If you prefer a less intense chocolate flavour, you can use 2 tbsp of cocoa powder and 1 tbsp of chocolate drink powder
Just mix all ingredients together until well combined. Roll into little balls and then roll them in desiccated coconut and/or sprinkles. You can also roll the balls in chopped hazelnuts or almonds.
If you’ve got little children helping you, you may get some very interesting shapes..
You can enjoy the chocolate balls straight away or keep them in an airtight container in the fridge.
